We have geometry: a system of external relations of spatiotemporal distances between points... And at those points we have local qualities: perfectly natural intrinsic properties which need nothing bigger than a point at which to be instantiated. For 35 short, we have an arrangement of qualities. And that is all. ’1 Lewis’s picture is that spacetime is the fundamental backdrop against which all events occur, and that everything that happens in spacetime is entirely determined by what is the case at each point in spacetime.

Well, perhaps so, but it concerns a very general and fundamental issue. Our understanding of the world by and large derives from breaking it down into its constituent parts, and figuring out what the properties of those parts are. Now, in this chapter I will not deny that the world is composed out of ultimate parts (I will attempt to deny even this in Chapter 4). In particular, for the purposes of this chapter I am quite happy to accept that the ultimate parts of the world are spacetime points.

Imagine a two-dimensional purely spatial world and a three-dimensional purely spatial world, where both spaces are flat infinite Euclidean spaces. Consider a circle in the two-dimensional world, and consider all the points that lie inside that circle. This is an open set, an open disk, since it is a set of all points that are within a certain distance (the radius of the circle) from a certain point (the centre of the circle). Now let us think whether there are topological duplicates of this disk in the three-dimensional world.
